Medical expert confirms the expected regarding Alim McNeill’s injury

Doctor confirms the inevitable regarding Lions defensive tackle Alim McNeill

A significant late-season injury is never ideal, and unfortunately, that’s the situation with Alim McNeill.

During the Week 15 game against the Buffalo Bills, McNeill suffered a serious injury that quickly became clear. The Detroit Lions defensive tackle tore his right ACL, causing him to miss the remainder of the season as Detroit’s growing list of defensive injuries continued.

When players cleaned out their lockers after the season, McNeill spoke about the uncertainty surrounding his recovery timeline.

“I have no idea about the time frame,” McNeill said. “I’m just taking things day by day. I’m focused on going through the process right now.”

An ACL tear recovery generally takes 9-12 months, and while it’s unclear if McNeill suffered additional knee damage that could affect his recovery, the progress of his rehab will become clearer as the offseason continues.

Doctor confirms inevitable about Alim McNeill

While in New Orleans for the Super Bowl, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press spoke with Dr. David Chao of Sports Injury Central on radio row to discuss the multitude of injuries the Lions faced this season.

It’s no surprise that the timing of McNeill’s injury raises doubts about his availability for the start of the next season. Dr. Chao expressed that McNeill is the Lions’ greatest concern among all the injuries.

“Alim McNeill’s the biggest worry. I think it will be tough for him to be ready for the season opener,” Dr. Chao said. “It’s difficult, but not impossible. If he can return later in the season and still perform at his best, that would be a positive outcome. That’s what the team is hoping for.”

The Lions have a history of exercising caution with players recovering from major injuries, and McNeill will certainly be treated the same way. He will gradually return to practice once he’s cleared, and his return to game action may be delayed as long as needed.

Given the possibility that McNeill may not be fully recovered until later in the season, the Lions may consider adding a defensive tackle in free agency or through the draft.
