The Detroit Lions are widely expected to make a significant investment in an edge rusher during the 2025 NFL offseason.
This is a critical need after the team struggled to sack opposing quarterbacks throughout the 2024 season.
Aidan Hutchinson was the team’s sack leader this past season, even though he only played five games, and there was a noticeable drop-off in production behind him.
Fortunately, the Lions will have some intriguing options available to them this offseason.
There are some high-profile trade candidates, along with a strong group of defensive line free agents this year.
One of those free agents is a former Defensive Player of the Year, and the Lions are considered one of the top potential destinations for him.
In an article exploring where the best free agent defensive linemen could land this offseason, Pro Football Focus’ Mason Cameron identified the Lions as a prime spot for Los Angeles Chargers edge rusher Khalil Mack.
Mack had an outstanding 2023 season for the Chargers, tallying 17 sacks, 74 total tackles, and five forced fumbles in his second year in LA.
However, 2024 saw his numbers drop significantly. He only managed six sacks, although he still recorded 49 pressures and led all edge rushers with six batted passes, according to PFF.
While the decline in his stats isn’t ideal, Mack was still tied for second on the team in sacks, and there could be one clear reason for the drop in his production.
He played 318 fewer snaps in 2024.
The Chargers also blitzed much less this season, dropping from a 31.5% blitz rate in 2023 to 23.8% in 2024.
Meanwhile, the Lions had the second-highest blitz rate in the league in 2024 at 34.6%.
With a higher blitz rate and opposing offenses focusing on Hutchinson, joining the Lions would provide Mack with more chances to disrupt quarterbacks and potentially improve his stats.
Though he’ll be pricey, Mack would be a worthwhile investment for the Lions as they look to overhaul their defense following a disappointing playoff exit.
While he may not generate as much excitement as some trade candidates, it’s hard to top Mack in free agency, and he’s certainly a player the Lions should consider if they pursue that route.
