**Former Detroit Lions Coach Delivers Tough News to Aaron Rodgers**
Former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has reportedly delivered disappointing news to quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
The NFL offseason is typically filled with teams striving to improve their rosters, and one team that faces significant challenges is the New York Jets. Aaron Glenn, who previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, is now the Jets’ head coach, aiming to help them perform better than their 2024 season, which ended with a disappointing 5-12 record.
Now, a recent report indicates that Glenn and Jets general manager Darren Mougey are parting ways with the star quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
**Report Reveals Jets and Aaron Glenn are Moving On from Rodgers**
On Sunday, February 9, Jay Glazer from Fox NFL Sunday shared the news on X, reporting that Rodgers and the Jets are apparently separating.
Glazer posted that Rodgers “flew back to New Jersey last week to meet with the Jets about his future with the team, only to be told that the team was moving on from him.”
He went on to add that “If that means he’ll be a June 1 designation, it will allow him to sign with any team in the league by March 12 if he chooses to keep playing.”
Glazer pointed out that Rodgers doesn’t seem ready to retire, as “Aaron made the effort to return and discuss his future, indicating he plans to keep playing. However, it won’t be with the Jets.”
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport also reported that the Jets and Rodgers are parting ways, stating the two are “heading in different directions, resulting in a split.”
Back in January, the former Lions defensive coordinator addressed Rodgers’ future with the team, saying, “Here’s what I do know: Aaron Rodgers will be talked about, it will be discussed. We’ve already communicated with Aaron Rodgers. As we assess the roster, we’ll make decisions accordingly, and that includes many people on the team.”
Although this news is unexpected, it didn’t come out of nowhere. NFL analyst Nick Shook added in a February 9 piece that “Rodgers’ future has been unclear for months,” noting that the quarterback has frequently discussed his potential options, including his willingness to stay with the Jets if they wanted him.
**Aaron Rodgers’ Career Numbers**
It will be interesting to see which teams might be interested in Rodgers. Several NFL teams could use a veteran quarterback, but finding him a new team might not be an easy task.
“A handful of teams need help at quarterback,” Shook noted, while suggesting Rodgers is now “more of an experienced bridge quarterback” than a long-term solution.
Regarding Rodgers’ contract, Over the Cap reports that a pre-June 1 trade or release would result in $49 million in dead cap for the Jets, though a post-June 1 move would free up $9.5 million in cap space for the team.
