The Philadelphia Eagles thwarted the Kansas City Chiefs’ pursuit of a third consecutive championship, defeating them 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX.
Hurts guided the Eagles to their second Super Bowl appearance in just three years. After falling to the Chiefs in 2022, Hurts redeemed himself by leading the Eagles past the Chiefs on Sunday with an impressive performance. He completed 17 of 22 passes for 221 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, while also rushing for 72 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. His stellar performance earned him the Super Bowl LIX MVP title.
“God is good; he’s great through the highs and lows,” Hurts said following the game. “Personally, I’ve used every experience to grow, both the good and the bad, turning them into fuel to strive for greatness. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates. We had a special group this year, learned from the past, brought in new pieces, and overcame the challenges.”
The former Alabama and Oklahoma quarterback now joins Bart Starr and Joe Namath as former Crimson Tide players to win the Super Bowl MVP. Starr earned the MVP in Super Bowls I and II, while Namath claimed the honor in Super Bowl III. Hurts becomes the first Super Bowl MVP from Oklahoma.
Hurts scored the first touchdown of the game and also threw Alabama’s first-ever Super Bowl touchdown to DeVonta Smith, with the NFL recognizing Hurts as an Oklahoma player.
This victory improves Hurts’ postseason record to 6-3 over four seasons, with two Super Bowl appearances. He has led the Philadelphia Eagles to a 52-23 overall record and two NFC East division championships since being selected 53rd overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.
