Josh Sweat demonstrated his value, making a strong case for the Detroit Lions to sign him in free agency.
The Lions need to add an edge rusher to pair with Aidan Hutchinson, and Josh Sweat has quickly become a prime candidate. Heading into Super Bowl LIX, Sweat was an easy inclusion on lists of free agents from the Eagles and Chiefs that the Lions should consider. Then he delivered a standout performance on the Super Bowl stage.
Though the MVP award typically goes to a quarterback, with Jalen Hurts deserving the honor after his game, Sweat was arguably the runner-up. He racked up 2.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, and six pressures, per Next Gen Stats.
Sweat made himself a lot of money with that performance. After signing a one-year, $10 million deal last offseason to bet on himself, he responded with eight sacks and 54 quarterback pressures, according to Pro Football Focus. His Super Bowl effort only confirmed his status as perhaps the top free-agent edge rusher available.
The big question is how much it will cost to sign him. Spotrac projects Sweat’s market value at $18.8 million per year on a projected three-year, $56.46 million deal. While he may not have elite sack totals, his solid run defense and the lack of premium edge rushers in this free-agent class increase his value.
Sweat turns 28 in late March, which makes this his best shot at a significant contract. While teams like the Cardinals and Titans seem like logical destinations, any team needing pass-rush help and with cap space—such as the Lions—should be in the mix.
Recently, Sweat hired Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha as his agents, signaling his intent to secure the best possible deal. This makes sense, given how rare opportunities like this are for a player of his caliber.
After winning the Super Bowl, Sweat naturally wanted to enjoy the victory before thinking about his next step. However
