Kellen Moore, a former backup quarterback for the Detroit Lions, is finalizing an agreement with the New Orleans Saints to become their next head coach.
According to NFL Network, Moore has notified the Philadelphia Eagles, whom he recently helped guide to a Super Bowl victory as their offensive coordinator, and the Saints have informed other candidates of their decision.
Moore served as one of Matthew Stafford’s backup quarterbacks for three seasons in Detroit. Although the Boise State star never played in a game for the Lions, his time in Detroit was formative.
“Each step along the way in the NFL is challenging and difficult, and you never know how many opportunities you’ll get to be in this position, so I was lucky,” Moore shared with the Detroit Free Press about his time in Detroit last week.
“I was surrounded by great coaches and people in Detroit, my first experience in the NFL. It was an enjoyable time. We had our ups and downs, but we made the playoffs one year. I learned a lot from each one of those guys.”
Moore wrapped up his playing career with the Dallas Cowboys, where he started his coaching journey as the quarterbacks coach. He later became the offensive coordinator in Dallas before moving on to similar roles with the Los Angeles Chargers and, most recently, the Eagles.
Moore’s hiring with the Saints signals the end of the head coaching search following the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, the Lions lost both their offensive and defensive coordinators to other teams, with Ben Johnson heading to Chicago and Aaron Glenn taking a position with the New York Jets.
