Kellen Moore Becomes Head Coach of the Saints After Time with Lions

Another coach with Detroit Lions ties will lead an NFL team for the first time in 2025.

Kellen Moore, 36, a former quarterback who spent three seasons with the Lions from 2012-14, was named head coach of the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday. His hiring wraps up this year’s coaching cycle, with seven teams, including the Chicago Bears (Ben Johnson) and New York Jets (Aaron Glenn), bringing in new head coaches.

Moore was a four-year starter at Boise State before signing with the Lions as an undrafted free agent in 2012. He completed 69.8% of his 1,658 college pass attempts for 14,667 yards, 142 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions, finishing with a passer rating of 118.61.

As a starter, he posted a 50-3 record, never losing more than once in a single season.

Moore was behind Matthew Stafford on the depth chart and never played a game for the Lions but did make two starts with the Dallas Cowboys in 2015. He spent two more seasons with Dallas before retiring and becoming the team’s quarterbacks coach in 2018. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2019 and stayed in the role until 2022.

After parting ways with the Cowboys, Moore joined Brandon Staley as offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023. Staley was fired after 14 games, and Moore later signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as offensive coordinator, helping them win Super Bowl LIX.

This season, Philadelphia ranked seventh in points per game (27.2) and eighth in total yards (367.2).
