The Tampa Bay Rays have expanded their bullpen depth by acquiring right-handed pitcher Mason Englert from the Detroit Tigers. In exchange, they sent minor league left-hander Drew Sommers to Detroit. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Rays moved Rule 5 draft pick Nate Lavender to the 60-day Injured List.

Englert, 25, was initially drafted by the Texas Rangers in the fourth round of the 2018 draft and was once considered a top prospect. However, his career was set back by Tommy John surgery before he could make his professional debut. Despite this hurdle, he worked his way up and was later selected by the Tigers in the 2022 Rule 5 Draft.

During his time with the Tigers, Englert spent the first half of the 2023 season in the major league bullpen but was sidelined by a hip injury in July. This led to a stint on the Injured List and a minor league rehab assignment, helping Detroit manage the Rule 5 restrictions.

In 2024, he had an up-and-down season with the Tigers, finishing with a 5.40 ERA, a 4.92 FIP, a 17.2% strikeout rate, and a 5.4% walk rate over 21 2/3 innings. Despite those numbers, Englert is known for his strong command and an impressive changeup and slider.

Sommers, 24, was an 11th-round pick by the Rays in 2022 and has steadily moved up through the minor leagues as a reliever. In High-A last season, he posted a 4.00 ERA with a 2.85 FIP, a 27.9% strikeout rate, and an 8.6% walk rate over 54 innings.
