Luka Doncic, the newly acquired Los Angeles Lakers star, has faced some criticism from fans for appearing sluggish on offense and struggling with defensive closeouts since joining the team.
In response to a fan’s question about when Lakers fans can expect Luka to reach 100% after recovering from a left calf strain, Jovan Buha of The Athletic shared his thoughts on his recent podcast.
“From covering teams for seven years, one thing that coaches and players often say is that once training camp begins, you’re never truly 100% for the rest of the season,” Buha explained.
“He’ll never be fully healthy because I don’t think LeBron will be 100%, and Austin won’t be either. You’re never at 100%,” he added. “These players are always dealing with something. And sometimes, it’s stuff we don’t know about or that isn’t made public because they don’t want people to know. For example, you might tweak your knee and play through it without it being on the injury report.”
“There are numerous things going on that we don’t always know or can’t report on, and that can affect players,” Buha continued. “I believe Doncic can get close to 100%, and I don’t think he needs a full offseason to do so.”
Since joining the Lakers, Doncic has averaged 15.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists over two games while on a 23.5 minutes-per-game restriction.
The Dallas Mavericks had concerns about his condition, which reportedly played a role in their decision to trade him. However, it is still too early to form a definitive judgment after just two games in a Lakers jersey.
