Minnesota Vikings Considering Matthew Stafford Trade After Concerns Over JJ McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings are among the teams reportedly interested in acquiring Rams QB Matthew Stafford, after Los Angeles’ front office allegedly became frustrated with his wife’s frequent podcast revelations, leading them to put him on the trade block. Kelly Stafford faced backlash for disclosing the team’s plan to trade Cooper Kupp.

CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan suggests the Vikings may offer their 2025 NFL draft’s No. 24 pick for Stafford, citing doubts about former Michigan star JJ McCarthy’s potential.

“This situation hinges on the Vikings’ efforts to keep Sam Darnold (who struggled late in the season) and their confidence in J.J. McCarthy. If they seek to upgrade their quarterback play from Darnold but still think McCarthy needs more time to develop, Stafford offers them a high ceiling for at least the next two years.

However, if they feel McCarthy is ready to become QB1 or choose to stick with Darnold through the franchise tag or an extension, this would block a Stafford move,” Sullivan wrote.

“Stafford’s connection with head coach Kevin O’Connell, who was his offensive coordinator during his first season with the Rams in 2021, which resulted in a Super Bowl LVI title, could help make a deal happen.”

McCarthy struggled in training camp before suffering a torn meniscus during the preseason, forcing him to miss the entire 2024 season.

Another season on the bench would likely push McCarthy closer to a backup role, with much to prove before he can be seen as a starting option for a contending team that won 14 games last year.
