A report suggests that the Los Angeles Rams are becoming frustrated with Matthew Stafford and his wife, Kelly, for multiple reasons.
There has been plenty of speculation about whether former Detroit Lions and current Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford will remain in L.A. for another season. While Stafford has expressed his desire to continue playing in the NFL in 2025, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll stay with the Rams.
NFL expert and sports analyst Colin Cowherd has shared insider information about where the Rams stand regarding Stafford’s contract extension.
Matthew Stafford and Wife Frustrating the Rams: Report
On the February 13 episode of his show, Cowherd discussed the former Lions quarterback and the overall NFL quarterback situation. He mentioned that he “made a couple of calls yesterday and a couple of texts this morning” before presenting a proposal based on his inside sources.
His key suggestions included Stafford being traded to the New York Giants and Aaron Rodgers joining the Rams. A bold idea, right? But what he said about Stafford’s return to Los Angeles was even more intriguing.
Cowherd claimed that the Rams’ front office is growing weary of the constant speculation surrounding Stafford and the fact that Kelly Stafford has been openly critical of team decisions on her podcast, including the possible departure of Cooper Kupp.
“The Rams like Matt Stafford, but they’re getting tired of the nonstop quarterback talk and his wife’s public remarks,” Cowherd said. “They’re also not pleased with Cooper Kupp going public about something they wanted to keep quiet.”
He continued, “They’re sort of over Cooper Kupp, and to some extent, Matt Stafford. They respect him but don’t want to restructure his contract or offer him a new deal.”
Former Lions Quarterback Could Be Heading to New York
Regarding Stafford’s potential move to the Giants, Cowherd noted that the Giants aren’t interested in this year’s quarterback draft class. He pointed out that head coach Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen are under pressure to win or risk being fired before Thanksgiving.
“They’re going to get run out of the building,” he said. “I believe they will make a move for Matt Stafford.”
Shifting focus to Kelly Stafford’s comments, on the February 6 episode of her podcast, The Morning After, she addressed the Rams informing Kupp about their trade plans.
“I wasn’t planning to bring this up, but why not?” she said on the show. “My husband wants to win. He’s not trying to put a team in a bad position. If you understand what I’m saying, you understand.”
She also hinted at a possible trade, saying that while she loves “the city of L.A.,” she also enjoys “an adventure.”
At the end of last season, Stafford agreed to a short-term raise for 2024 with no long-term commitment. His cap hit for 2025 stands at $49.6 million. The Rams could save $27 million by trading him after June 1 or $23 million if they trade him before that date.
