AC Green Shares How He Maintained His Virginity Despite Lakers Teammates Sending Women To His Room

AC Green Discusses How He Stayed A Virgin Despite Lakers Teammates Attempting To Send Women To His Hotel Rooms

AC Green, the former NBA player known for his vow of abstinence until marriage, discussed this topic on the Fast Break podcast hosted by Byron Scott. Co-host Kid Jay asked Green about which of his former Los Angeles Lakers teammates had tried to send a woman his way, and Green humorously revealed it happened more than once.

Kid Jay: “Which of your teammates tried sending a woman your way to break your resolve?”

Byron Scott: “I already shared my story, so you know it wasn’t me…”

AC Green: “Let me correct something. You said a female?”

Jay: “Oh! More than one?”

Scott: “It wasn’t me, I tried to keep them away, saying, ‘Get away from here.’”

Green: “That’s true… It has always been part of my faith, my personal values, and self-respect. It was a choice I made and never forced it on anyone else, as it wasn’t about them. It was about what worked for me. That lifestyle was enjoyable, and it never felt abnormal. It was simply right for me, and I was focused on learning how to navigate life with my teammates and function in society. I knew the time would come, and I was fine with waiting.”

(beginning at 30:33 mark):

Green had a 16-season NBA career after the Lakers drafted him 23rd overall in 1985. Despite the distractions of fame and his teammates’ actions, he remained committed to abstaining from sex throughout his career.

While Green didn’t impose his choices on others, he aimed to inspire young people. In 1989, he founded the A.C. Green Youth Foundation, which hosts youth camps to encourage abstinence until marriage.

Green retired from the NBA in 2001 at 37 as a virgin, but he didn’t stay one for long. He married Veronique in 2002, and they consummated their marriage afterward.

It’s remarkable that Green resisted temptation for so long, especially considering the stories about NBA players and women over the years. Green shared one of his own in this podcast episode.

“I was driving through LA, and I started laughing,” Green recalled. “I had a flashback, a funny but traumatic one. I checked into my hotel, dropped my bags, and was heading out to grab a cold drink.”

“I wanted something cold, so I went for the ice bucket,” Green continued. “And when I walked down the hall, I saw two women in fur coats by the ice machine… I thought, ‘Fur coats, heels, nails, hair… I’m not that thirsty anymore.’”

Green added, “I figured there might be even less under those coats, and I wasn’t interested in that at all. I was good.”

Byron Scott admitted he would’ve gone straight to those ladies, which is likely how most NBA players would have reacted. Green was certainly the exception in this case.

Abstaining from sex until marriage is a central part of Green’s story, but it’s also crucial to acknowledge his impressive NBA career. He won three championships, made one All-Star team, and earned a spot on one All-Defensive Team.

Green also holds an NBA record that may never be broken: he played 1,192 consecutive regular season games. Mikal Bridges, currently the active player closest to this record, still has a long way to go, with 528 consecutive games played.
