Ex-College Rival of Amon-Ra St. Brown, John Morton, Officially Joins Lions as Passing Game Coordinator
USC Trojans legend Amon-Ra St. Brown now knows who will officially assist new Detroit Lions offensive coordinator John Morton as passing game coordinator. Ironically, it’s a former college football rival of the All-Pro wide receiver.
The team has officially announced the full list of coaches who will make up the 2025 Lions. David Shaw is stepping in to take that role alongside Morton. He’s the same Shaw who coached at Stanford and even attempted to recruit St. Brown.
Shaw led Stanford from 2011 to 2022, guiding the program to Pac-12 championships and Rose Bowl berths. During that time, he also had to prepare for St. Brown’s USC teams in 2018 and 2019.
Those Trojans split the series while St. Brown was catching passes. He had just two receptions for 39 yards in USC’s 2018 loss to Stanford. However, he exploded in 2019, hauling in eight catches for 97 yards and scoring twice in a 45-20 USC victory. The teams did not meet in the shortened 2020 season due to COVID-19.
On his St. Brown’s Podcast on Feb. 7, the Lions star revealed that Shaw was in the process of joining head coach Dan Campbell’s staff. St. Brown first met Shaw while visiting Stanford during his recruitment.
“I’ve known Shaw since high school. I always thought he was a great guy and honest,” St. Brown said. “He texted me after he was hired. I’m excited to see him. It’s going to be fun.”
Stanford was among St. Brown’s scholarship offers while he starred at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana. However, he ultimately committed to USC’s 2018 recruiting class.
This will be the former head coach’s first coaching role since leading Stanford in 2022, when the team finished 3-9.
Shaw then moved to the NFL, serving as a senior personnel executive for the Denver Broncos under Sean Payton for the past two seasons.
