John Morton commits to keeping Lions offense ‘dependent’ on Jared Goff.

When Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell discussed the replacement for Ben Johnson as offensive coordinator, he emphasized the importance of Jared Goff’s involvement in the decision to maintain the strong connection Goff had with Johnson.

The choice of John Morton as the new offensive coordinator aligns with Campbell’s desire for continuity, given Morton’s time with the Lions in 2022. It’s safe to assume that Goff’s endorsement played a key role in the hiring.

While some may worry about the potential impact of the coaching change on Goff’s performance, Morton assures that he will do everything to tailor the offense to the quarterback, just as Johnson did.

In an interview with Dan Miller of Fox2, Morton discussed how his previous experience with the team helped eliminate many of the uncertainties typical for a new coordinator.

“It’s important with the quarterback,” Morton said. “Having been in the quarterback room, I know what he likes and doesn’t like. That’s crucial for a play-caller. I’ll continue getting to know more about him and the plays that work well.”

Morton confirmed that the Lions’ offense will remain “predicated on the quarterback,” just as it was under Johnson. While the core philosophy will stay intact, Morton will add his personal touch where appropriate.

“They’ve built a solid foundation here,” Morton said. “My job is to carry out Dan’s vision. We’ll make small adjustments and see how we can improve things.”

Morton appears to be stepping into a favorable situation as the new offensive coordinator and seems fully aware of the opportunity ahead.
