Shannon Sharpe Gets Brutally Honest About Kelly Stafford’s Influence on the Rams Avoiding Matthew Stafford’s Contract Restructure

“I love the life we’ve built here [in LA]. That said, I love an adventure. I’m all for it,” said Matthew Stafford’s wife, Kelly, regarding the possibility of her husband being traded this offseason.

Kelly, known for being outspoken, made the remark after the Los Angeles Rams put Cooper Kupp on the trade block. Meanwhile, Shannon Sharpe is unimpressed with her involvement in the conversation, arguing that a player’s family should stay out of contract discussions.

The former tight end believes that when statements come from a loved one, they can send the wrong message to both fans and the team. It could even be interpreted as the player’s personal thoughts on the matter.

Sharpe speculated that this might be fueling rumors that the Rams are considering trading Stafford to the New York Giants in exchange for the No. 3 pick. The rumors emerged just days after Kelly’s comments, adding to the speculation.

“I like Matt. He’s phenomenal. Met his wife a couple of times. She’s great. But she loves her husband and feels he hasn’t been given the respect he deserves for what he’s done for them. And she has no problem saying so. But here’s the thing,” Sharpe said on Nightcap.

“What did I tell you about someone’s significant other or family member making statements? Where does the team, where does that fanbase think that’s coming from?” Sharpe continued.

Sharpe bluntly stated that Kelly’s outspoken nature might push the Rams to trade Stafford. By simply not restructuring his contract, the team could make him available, and the Giants might be interested. If Kelly’s words reflect Stafford’s stance, he may be open to the move as well.

“If my brother, my sister, said something… Even if it didn’t come from me, ‘Oh man, you know they got that from Unc,’” Sharpe explained, illustrating how people perceive statements from a player’s inner circle.

However, Sharpe also admitted that moving on from Stafford makes business sense for the Rams. They could start Stetson Bennett and use the Giants’ third pick to draft a rookie quarterback for development.

“I don’t know why they won’t redo the man’s contract. Damn, Stafford’s still slinging it. But I know they like Stetson Bennett. Ain’t he cheap?” Sharpe added.

With the Rams also exploring trade options for Kupp, the team appears to be positioning itself for a younger roster. While no official moves have been made, the big question remains—who will step in if the Rams part ways with their veterans?

There’s a lot in play, but it’s unlikely the Giants would give up their No. 3 pick for an aging quarterback.
