Controversial NFL Player Escapes Punishment for Handgun Possession Following Celebration Scandal

Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams will not face any suspension or fine after being found with a handgun during a traffic stop in October, according to an NFL spokesperson who told the Detroit Free Press the matter is now “closed.”

The 23-year-old previously avoided criminal charges after police found the gun during a stop for speeding. Williams was a passenger in a car driven by his brother when officers discovered two guns—one registered to Williams and the other to his brother.

Though Williams didn’t have a concealed pistol license at the time, he obtained one afterward.

In November, Wayne County (Michigan) prosecutors declined to press charges against Williams.

Williams has faced two suspensions from the league—totaling six games—in his first three NFL seasons for violations of gambling and performance-enhancing drug policies.

He has also been fined over $70,000 for various offenses, including taunting, an obscene gesture, and a recent highly sexualized touchdown celebration.

During the Lions’ playoff loss to the Washington Commanders, Williams scored a touchdown and appeared to thrust his hips toward the ground before teammate Amon-Ra St. Brown pulled him upright during the celebration.

Although the broadcast quickly cut away, the two seconds that aired were enough to spark controversy.

The NFL’s X account posted video of the touchdown but cut it short before showing Williams’ explicit celebration.

His score was a key moment in a wild first half, bringing the Lions within 24-21 after his massive run ended with a somersault into the end zone.

Williams wrapped up an impressive season in Detroit, finishing with 58 receptions for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns across 15 games (11 starts).

The St. Louis native now has 10 career touchdowns in 33 games (21 starts) since being drafted 12th overall by the Lions in 2022.

He is also the cousin of Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams.
