Detroit Lions Likely To Sign Former First-Round Pick In Free Agency, “A Lot Of Fun On The Lions”

The Detroit Lions finished with a 15-2 record and the top seed in the NFC before being eliminated by the Washington Commanders in the playoffs. The defense struggled with numerous injuries last season.

Aidan Hutchinson suffered a season-ending injury early, and the defense never fully recovered after that. Detroit is aiming to strengthen its defense this offseason, though the roster doesn’t have many holes.

With their Super Bowl window open, the Lions need to make a major move on the defensive line. While there are many options, one name Pro Football Network suggests Detroit should target in free agency is Khalil Mack. Pro Football Network noted:

“The Detroit Lions were one of the most challenging teams to project for free agency. They have a strong roster and, if not for mounting injuries toward the end of the season, arguably should have made Super Bowl 59. They need to replace Kevin Zeitler at guard, but most of their main needs are on the defensive side.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Lions pursue a cornerback, and D.J. Reed could be a good veteran option who won’t be a liability. However, the most intriguing possibility would be to add Khalil Mack to a defensive line featuring Za’Darius Smith and Aidan Hutchinson. The Lions have the flexibility to afford him and create an elite pass-rushing trio.

Mack won’t come cheap, but the Lions have over $40 million in cap space and few other pressing needs. He’d be a lot of fun on the Lions, forming a fearsome trio for opposing offensive lines.”

Last season, Khalil Mack played for the Los Angeles Chargers, where he recorded 39 tackles, six sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and nine pass deflections. At 33 years old, Mack may not have the same explosive ability he once did, but the Detroit Lions and other teams will likely want him next season as well.
