Ex-Lions All-Pro with $42 Million Deal Open to Detroit Comeback

A familiar face could be an option for the Detroit Lions as they look to fix their cornerback issues this offseason.

The team might have a major need at the position with Carlton Davis heading for free agency.

If he departs, the Lions could be forced to rely heavily on the two cornerbacks they drafted last season.

However, a player they selected over a decade ago seems open to helping them address that gap.

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay is considered a potential cut candidate this offseason as he enters the final year of his $42 million deal.

If released, the Lions appear to be his top choice for his next team.

In a February 19 appearance on The St. Brown Podcast, Slay expressed his desire to play one more NFL season, ideally with the Eagles or Lions.

Slay stated, “For sure the two spots I would love to always be at is Philly or Detroit.”

The Lions drafted Slay 36th overall in 2013, and he had a strong run with the team.

In seven seasons, he made three Pro Bowls, earned an All-Pro nod, and once tied for the league lead in interceptions.

During that span, he totaled 104 pass breakups, 19 interceptions, and 347 tackles.

He’s spent the last five seasons with the Eagles, contributing to their championship roster this past year.

In his 12th NFL season, Slay limited opposing quarterbacks to a 54.7% completion rate and 6.1 yards per attempt when targeted.

Though he’s now 34, raising concerns of decline, he could still be a valuable piece for a Lions secondary filled with uncertainty.

While Detroit would still need a bigger move to elevate their defense, adding a six-time Pro Bowler fresh off a Super Bowl win could be a smart fit.
