Detroit Lions

Former All-Pro Lions player, valued at $42 million, willing to rejoin Detroit.

A familiar name may emerge as a potential solution for the Detroit Lions as they address their cornerback needs this offseason.

The team may face a significant void at the position with Carlton Davis heading toward free agency.

If he departs, the Lions may need to rely on the two cornerbacks they drafted last year.

However, it appears a player they selected more than a decade ago is willing to help them fill that gap.

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay is seen as a possible cut this offseason as he enters the final year of his $42 million contract.

Should that happen, the Lions might be his top destination for the next phase of his career.

In a February 19 appearance on “The St. Brown Podcast,” Slay expressed his desire to play another season in the NFL, ideally with the Eagles or the Lions.

Slay stated, “For sure the two spots I would love to always be at is Philly or Detroit.”

Slay had a successful stint with the Lions after being drafted 36th overall in 2013.

Over seven seasons with Detroit, he earned three Pro Bowl selections and an All-Pro honor. He also tied for the league lead in interceptions at one point.

During that period, Slay accumulated 104 pass breakups, 19 interceptions, and 347 total tackles.

He has spent the past five years with the Eagles, playing a crucial role on their Super Bowl-winning roster this past season.

In his 12th NFL season, Slay limited opposing quarterbacks to a 54.7% completion rate and 6.1 yards per pass attempt when targeted.

At 34, there will be concerns about Slay potentially declining, but he could still be a valuable asset for the Lions’ cornerback group, which has several uncertainties.

While the team would likely need a larger move to upgrade their defense, a six-time Pro Bowler coming off a Super Bowl victory could be a strong addition for Detroit.
