The Detroit Lions seem to be embracing the idea of familiar faces making a return.
First, it was former Lions cornerback Darius Slay who expressed interest, naming the Lions as one of two teams he’d consider joining next season.
Now, another former Lion could potentially make his way back.
Earlier this week, NFL.com’s Matt Okada identified former Lions guard Jonah Jackson as a possible cut candidate for the Los Angeles Rams.
With Jackson’s future in L.A. uncertain, AtoZ Sports’ Mike Payton suggested the Lions should consider bringing him back if he becomes available.
The Lions drafted Jackson in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and he quickly became a key piece of their offensive line.
He started all 16 games as a rookie and earned a Pro Bowl nod in his second season.
Jackson stayed in the starting lineup for two more seasons before hitting free agency. His impressive stint with Detroit helped him secure a major contract.
The Rams signed him to a three-year, $51 million deal, placing him among the NFL’s top 10 highest-paid guards.
However, the 2024 season didn’t go as planned for L.A.
Jackson played only four regular season games due to injury, allowing nine pressures in that limited time.
Now, the Rams might move on, and the timing could align perfectly for a Detroit return.
When Jackson left, the Lions signed Kevin Zeitler to a one-year deal. Zeitler had a solid season but is now set for free agency and could attract significant interest.
If Zeitler departs, bringing Jackson back could help maintain continuity on the offensive line.
The Lions also have Christian Mahogany as a potential Zeitler replacement, but with only two career starts, they may prefer a veteran presence while Mahogany develops.
Though Jackson’s recent injury history is a concern, he’s shown he can be a reliable asset and likely wouldn’t strain Detroit’s cap space.
He must be released first, but if the Rams part ways, a Detroit reunion wouldn’t be surprising.
