Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes may not fully embrace the idea that the team is in a “Super Bowl window.” However, it is clear that the list of offseason needs is small, and it’s also known that Holmes isn’t afraid to be aggressive during the draft.
Trading for Myles Garrett or another elite edge rusher seems unlikely for the Lions. Given the depth of the edge rusher class this year, they could find a capable starter at pick No. 28, or even in the second round at No. 60.
That said, Holmes has demonstrated a willingness to “go get” a player he believes in. If there’s a specific player the Lions covet in the first round, expect them to make an effort to move up from pick 28 to secure him.
Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report compiled a list of eight teams that should be most active in trading up during the 2025 draft, with a player in mind for each. The Lions are ranked No. 5 on this list.
In line with the need for a pass rusher, Davenport suggests Texas A&M edge rusher Nic Scourton as the player the Lions should target in a trade-up.
Scourton totaled 10 sacks, 50 tackles, and 15 tackles for loss at Purdue in 2023. Although he recorded only five sacks at Texas A&M last season, he had 14 tackles for loss and 37 tackles, earning First Team All-SEC honors. Further analysis from Pro Football Focus shows he registered 36 quarterback pressures in 2024, compared to 42 in 2023, with the same number of hurries (28). So, #sacksarerandom.
Scourton’s pass rush technique is highly regarded, and his 6-foot-4, 280-pound frame aligns with the type of edge rusher the Lions prefer. He has also gained popularity as a potential pick for Detroit in recent mock drafts.
Davenport concluded that while Scourton appears to be a perfect fit, he may not be the only player the Lions are willing to trade up for in their quest to find a young complement to Aidan Hutchinson.
