BYU

Preseason rankings predict BYU football as a College Football Playoff hopeful.

Early predictions have BYU football as a contender for the College Football Playoff.

BYU came close to reaching the College Football Playoff in 2024 and is expected to be a strong contender this year. The Cougars had an impressive season in 2024, defying expectations after being predicted to finish thirteenth in the Big 12 with only four wins. Instead, BYU went on an incredible run, winning their first nine games. They surprised many by defeating teams like Kansas State and SMU, and pulled off dramatic victories against Utah and Oklahoma State.

BYU was a surprise contender in last year’s College Football Playoff discussions, reaching as high as seventh in the rankings. However, two heartbreaking losses to Kansas and Arizona State, in which they fell just short, put a damper on their playoff hopes. Despite these tough losses, BYU ended the season tied for first in the Big 12. They capped off an outstanding year with a dominant win over Colorado in the Alamo Bowl.

Early national rankings have BYU as one of the top teams likely to vie for a playoff spot.

What can we expect from BYU in 2025?

BYU set a high standard last season with an 11-win record and playoff-caliber play. Their thrilling victories and dominant performances created unforgettable moments.

The Cougars will face tough competition this year, with expectations high from fans, coaches, and analysts. However, BYU has a notable advantage: their elevation. As one of the highest teams in the Big 12, they use the altitude to their benefit, often causing issues for teams from lower elevations throughout the game.

BYU is in a strong position to reach the College Football Playoff, even if they don’t win the Big 12. Their talent and depth should be enough to win postseason games. With a balanced offense and a tough, aggressive defense, BYU is capable of competing with the best in college football. Additionally, their special teams unit, including kicker Will Ferrin and returner Keelan Marion, has made key plays, such as a pivotal punt return against Colorado and a game-winning field goal at Utah.

Overall, BYU Football has what it takes to reach the College Football Playoff. With the high bar set, the team will need to perform cohesively across offense, defense, and special teams.
