Detroit Lions Set to Target $40.5 Million All-Pro Veteran

The Detroit Lions are facing an intriguing situation on defense as NFL free agency approaches.

The team boasts several standout defensive players, including two of the league’s top safeties and an edge rusher who’s currently the frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year next season.

This defensive strength is the result of a significant commitment from the organization to bolster that side of the ball.

However, one position has yet to deliver on that investment: cornerback.

Despite trading for Carlton Davis and selecting two cornerbacks in the draft last year, the Lions have continued to struggle in this area.

With Davis heading into free agency and their two young cornerbacks still uncertain, the team is expected to explore free-agent options this offseason, possibly targeting a player with Super Bowl experience.

USA Today’s Jacob Camenker predicted that the Lions might pursue Charvarius Ward, the San Francisco 49ers’ cornerback.

Ward had a tough year, posting his worst stats since his rookie season.

He allowed a 61.5% completion rate and 7.5 yards per target, both career lows.

However, this likely won’t stop the Lions from considering him.

Much of the offseason focus for Detroit has been on adding edge talent to complement Aidan Hutchinson, but cornerback is likely the more pressing need.

While there are multiple edge options available in free agency, the draft, and via potential trades, cornerback is a more scarce position.

The free-agent pool for a viable CB1 is limited, and the draft options won’t offer much by the time the Lions pick in the first round.

Though Ward’s 2024 season raised concerns, he’s still in his prime and has proven his ability to perform at a high level.

The Lions are likely to make a strong move for Ward to shore up their cornerback position and bring more stability to the defense in 2025.
