Ex-Lions Quarterback Matthew Stafford Receiving Trade Attention from AFC Team

Could the Pittsburgh Steelers be a serious contender for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford?

Former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford may be on his way to a new Super Bowl contender.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Los Angeles Rams have given Stafford permission to explore a trade, with early reports suggesting that the 37-year-old quarterback is generating significant interest. One AFC playoff team, considered by some to be a Super Bowl contender with the right quarterback, is reportedly in the mix.

At least four teams have already shown interest in Stafford, including the Pittsburgh Steelers. The next step is for the Rams to decide how much they will ask in return for the quarterback who led them to a Super Bowl win.

“What’s difficult to predict now is what the Rams would accept to trade Stafford,” Breer wrote. “If it requires a first-round pick, would the teams still be willing to offer more than $50 million per year? And if that pick is in the top 10, which is the case for three of the teams involved, would the Rams consider accepting a 2026 pick instead of one this year? If not, how do the Rams move forward with Stafford?”

The Steelers could be among the most eager teams to acquire Stafford, as they head into 2025 with no clear quarterback solution, given that both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are set to hit free agency.

Curt Popejoy of USA Today’s Steelers Wire pointed out that the Steelers’ most probable move would be to sign a departing veteran, but the third option could be trading for Stafford and pairing him with a rookie quarterback to develop behind him for the upcoming season.

Popejoy also mentioned other potential options for the Steelers, including journeyman Jameis Winston or trading up in the NFL draft to secure Cam Ward.

The Steelers have made the playoffs in four of the last five years and have a roster full of talent capable of making a deeper postseason run with the right quarterback.

Some experts believe Stafford may stay in Los Angeles, leading a young team that could contend for another Super Bowl in 2025. Breer noted that after the Rams balked at giving him a long-term extension, another team could be willing to offer him closer to the market rate of $50 million per year.
