A 42-year-old man from Detroit has been accused of shooting a good Samaritan in the eye with a flare gun at a bus stop on Cass Avenue near Wayne State. The victim, who had stepped in to defend a woman from the suspect, sustained a non-fatal injury.
Daryl Tasmin Smith is facing charges, including assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to cause great bodily harm, and felonious assault.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of February 20.
According to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, Smith was allegedly harassing an elderly female passenger on a Detroit bus when a 33-year-old man intervened to protect her.
Upon exiting the bus at Cass and Warren, Smith reportedly took a flare gun from his hoodie pocket and fired it, hitting the victim in the eye before fleeing the scene.
Wayne State University Police arrived shortly after 4 p.m. and found the victim bleeding from his right eye while lying in the street. Emergency responders transported him to the hospital for medical care.
Smith was arraigned on Saturday in Detroit’s 36th District Court and was issued a $100,000 cash/surety bond, along with a GPS tether and house arrest. A probable cause conference is scheduled for March 3.
