Brad Holmes Drops Truth Bomb on Upcoming Contract Extensions for Lions Stars Aidan Hutchinson and Kerby Joseph

The Detroit Lions are coming off one of their most successful seasons ever. They won 15 games, captured their second straight NFC North title, and earned the top seed in the NFC playoffs. Unfortunately, Detroit fell to the Commanders in the Divisional Round.

Now, the Lions turn their attention to the offseason to avoid a repeat outcome.

Lions general manager Brad Holmes spoke with Mike Garafolo of NFL Network at the NFL Combine on Wednesday. During the conversation, Holmes addressed Detroit’s upcoming contract extensions for several key players.

“It’s a good problem to have, but when you look back you realize there’s a price to pay,” Holmes said via Garafolo. “In the moment, you’re excited—‘we got Penei Sewell’—then you add two first-rounders, two second-rounders, and two more first-round picks. All of a sudden, that’s seven high-level players we really like.”

Top priority for new contracts are edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson and safety Kerby Joseph.

“I’d love to keep everyone, but then you factor in guys like Kerby Joseph from the third round and Amon-Ra St. Brown from the fourth round—it piles up,” Holmes added. “It forces you to rethink how you approach free agency. We’ve already started planning and preparing for those adjustments.”

Lions GM Brad Holmes also praised Dan Campbell’s hires at coordinator.

Holmes took time to applaud Detroit’s coaching staff.

He specifically praised Campbell for how he handled replacing both Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn this offseason.

“I thought Dan did a phenomenal job filling two major vacancies,” Holmes said Wednesday. “Promoting Kelvin Sheppard, who’s been with us from day one and groomed for this moment, was perfect. He’s worked closely under Aaron Glenn and Dan the whole way.”

“John Morton was with us when we built this offense,” Holmes added. “He already knows the system and understands it starts with Jared at quarterback. They already have a relationship, so I’m confident we won’t miss a step.”

Lions fans are optimistic that new coordinators will keep the team on track for 2025.
