Richie Saunders scored 26 points, including six 3-pointers, in No. 25 BYU’s 91-81 win over Arizona State on Wednesday in Tempe, Ariz., during a Big 12 matchup.
Saunders, who previously scored a career-high 30 points in BYU’s victory over Arizona State in Provo, Utah, on Dec. 31, led the Cougars’ shooting effort, which included 17 made 3-pointers.
BYU ended the game shooting 17 of 34 from beyond the arc.
Trevin Knell also contributed, hitting a season-high five 3-pointers (5-of-6) and finishing with 18 points.
BYU (20-8, 11-6 Big 12) extended its winning streak to five games.
Arizona State (13-15, 4-13) was short-handed and suffered its eighth straight Big 12 home loss.
The Sun Devils played without their leading scorer BJ Freeman, who was dismissed from the team due to conduct issues. They were also missing Jayden Quaintance (knee) and Alston Mason (illness).
Adam Miller, who scored 11 points, sat out most of the first half with a hip injury and didn’t return for the final 13:09 of the game due to the same injury.
Basheer Jihad led Arizona State with 19 points, while freshmen Joson Sanon and Trevor Best each added 18.
Best, who had only played nine total minutes in five games before Wednesday, made 5 of 8 shots, 2 of 3 from 3-point range, and was perfect from the free-throw line, hitting all six attempts.
BYU took a 21-11 lead with 14:14 left in the first half after outscoring Arizona State 15-4.
Although the Sun Devils trimmed the lead to three, the Cougars extended it to 42-30 with 2:51 remaining in the first half.
Saunders and Knell combined for 27 points, shooting 9-of-15 from the field and 9-of-13 from beyond the arc, as BYU led 47-37 at halftime.
After BYU built a 72-56 lead with 9:28 left, Arizona State fought back, cutting the lead to 78-69 after a 3-pointer from Amier Ali with 5:34 remaining.
Dallin Hall, Saunders, and Mawot Mag each hit 3-pointers during a 13-5 stretch that gave BYU a 91-74 lead with 1:38 remaining.
Hall finished with 13 points, while Fousseyni Traore added 10 for the Cougars.
