Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards found himself in hot water with the NBA and had to avoid any more confrontations with officials during a Thursday night game against the Los Angeles Lakers. Edwards entered the game with 14 technical fouls, leading the league. At the end of the first quarter, Edwards earned his first technical after shoving former Timberwolves teammate Jarred Vanderbilt.
In the third quarter, Edwards picked up his second technical, resulting in an ejection. As he left the floor at the Crypto Arena, he threw the ball into the crowd. This incident pushed Edwards to 16 technical fouls for the season, triggering an automatic suspension from the NBA on Friday. He will miss one game and incur a $5,000 fine, bringing his total fines this season to $290,000, the highest in the league. This ejection marked the third of his career, and he has accumulated $434,000 in career fines, according to Spotrac.
Edwards has faced challenges with his composure this season, frequently disputing calls with officials. In November, he was fined $35,000 for an obscene gesture on the court. He was fined $100,000 in December for using profanity during a live TV interview, $75,000 for a profanity-laced critique of the referees, and $25,000 for similar language during a media interview. In January, he was fined $50,000 for making obscene gestures toward a game official.
Despite his controversial behavior, the 23-year-old Edwards remains one of the NBA’s most exciting players and top scorers. Before his ejection, he was averaging the fourth-most points per game in the league at 27.5. Without him, the Timberwolves struggled in the final moments of the game against the Lakers and will need to regroup for their upcoming matchup against the Utah Jazz on Friday. On Thursday, the Timberwolves also welcomed Donte DiVincenzo back to their rotation after a 19-game absence due to a toe injury. Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert remain sidelined and are unlikely to play on Friday.
