The Detroit Lions aim to build consistency in their pass rush and sack statistics.
New defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers brings a strong history of success as one of the NFL’s top defensive line coaches. During his tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, their defense consistently ranked in the top third of the league in sacks.
“They’re getting a tremendous coach. He has a deep understanding of football. He’s like family to me. He knows the game inside out,” said Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles at the combine. “Dan and Kacy have worked together in Dallas and Miami, so they already have that connection. He’ll be just fine there. They’re getting a very smart, tough, and disciplined coach.”
Rodgers is familiar with Lions head coach Dan Campbell, as they both spent time with the Cowboys during Campbell’s playing career (2003-2004), and later worked together on the Miami Dolphins coaching staff.
“I’ve seen him coach. I know the impact he has on the D-line. I’ve always had a lot of respect for him,” Campbell said during his media session at the combine. “When I found out he was available, it was a no-brainer. I think he’ll be excellent for our defensive line.”
Led by Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit’s defensive line could add another pass rusher through the upcoming NFL draft. Campbell believes Rodgers fits the team’s culture with his work ethic and player relationships.
“I believe Aidan Hutchinson and the others will really connect with him,” Campbell said. “He’s one of us; he’s committed to doing things the right way. A hardworking coach, he sees the game clearly, understands schemes well, and emphasizes fundamentals with his players.”
