Report: Raiders and Matthew Stafford find common ground on new contract, potentially helping Rams reach a deal too

Tom Brady’s meeting with Matthew Stafford seems to have gone well.

The Raiders and Stafford’s representatives have reached common ground on what a new deal might look like, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Although “common ground” is not the same as a finalized contract, the report strongly hints that if the Rams and Raiders can work out a trade, Stafford and the Raiders can finalize a deal.

Whether the Rams and Raiders can align is a different story. The report states the Raiders “want to keep the No. 6 pick at all costs.” If the Raiders refuse to trade their first-round pick, they might not land Stafford, even with contract terms nearly set.

The Rams could still hold onto Stafford. In fact, the Raiders finding contract common ground might even help Stafford and the Rams reach their own compromise. But by granting Stafford permission to speak with other teams, the Rams opened the door — and Stafford’s talks with the Raiders seem to be productive.
