Yankees Make Initial Roster Cuts in Spring Training

The Yankees have begun their first round of roster cuts this spring.

As March arrives, the countdown to Opening Day is now under four weeks, and teams are starting to trim their rosters following the initial stretch of exhibition games. This morning, the Yankees announced their first set of roster moves.

Five pitchers—Sean Boyle, Chase Hampton, Cristian Hernandez, Jayvien Sanridge, and Kevin Stevens—along with outfielder Brennen Davis, have been reassigned to minor league camp.

Among them, Boyle stood out with the strongest spring performance, pitching 5.2 scoreless innings over two outings while striking out six and walking three. Stevens was the only other player from this group to appear in a game, delivering a shutout inning.

Hampton is the most notable name in this wave of cuts. Unfortunately, the right-hander is sidelined for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Once considered one of the Yankees’ most promising pitching prospects since being drafted from Texas Tech in 2022, he now faces another long road to recovery.

Notably, no players from the Yankees’ 40-man roster have been cut yet, meaning those still in camp remain in contention for a spot on the team. The battle for roster positions continues today as the Yankees face the Astros in Tampa at 1:05 p.m. EST, with prospect Cam Schlittler set to start on the mound.
