Paul Finebaum Highlights SEC Coach Facing Consecutive ‘Weak’ Seasons
The 2024 college football season has been underwhelming for several teams, with the Kentucky Wildcats being one of the biggest disappointments.
After finishing with a 7-6 record last year, Kentucky took a step backward this season, ending with a 4-8 record. This marked the worst performance under head coach Mark Stoops since his inaugural season in 2013, when the team finished 2-10.
Stoops has had a strong run at Kentucky, becoming the program’s all-time winningest coach, and leading the team to two of its four seasons with 10 or more victories. However, during “The Paul Finebaum Show,” SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum pointed out that the Wildcats’ recent performances have been lacking, warning that Stoops’ job could be in jeopardy if things don’t improve.

“Stoops’ last two seasons have been pretty weak,” Finebaum said. “Everyone respects his past accomplishments, but at some point, you can’t keep relying on what you’ve done in the past.”
Finebaum suggested that Stoops may be depending on Eli Capilouto to stay on as Kentucky’s president, although he is uncertain how long that support will last. He also noted that Stoops appears to have backing from athletic director Mitch Barnhart.
Finebaum wrapped up by explaining that both university presidents and athletic directors can only provide support for so long. He referenced Mack Brown’s situation, noting that Brown thought he had the backing of North Carolina’s administration, only to find out later that wasn’t the case, resulting in his firing this offseason.
Finebaum believes Stoops faces mounting pressure as Kentucky gears up for a crucial season, starting with their season opener against Toledo on August 30.
