University of Pittsburgh football player Mason Alexander has passed away, the school confirmed on Sunday.
Alexander died in a car accident on Saturday night in his hometown of Fishers, Indiana. According to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, he was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a head-on crash.
Police reported that Alexander was in a 2016 BMW when the driver attempted to pass another car before reaching a hill. The driver swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle, causing the BMW to veer off the road, hit a tree, and catch fire.
Alexander was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 18 years old.
“I received a call this morning that no parent, teacher, or coach ever wants to receive — the heartbreaking news of a young and promising life lost,” Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi said. “Our entire team is shocked and devastated by Mason Alexander’s passing.
“Mason enrolled at Pitt in January after graduating early from Hamilton Southeastern High School in Indiana. Despite his short time with us, he left a positive impression. He was proud to be a Panther, and we were proud to have him. He will always be part of the Pitt family. Our prayers are with the Alexander family and all who loved Mason.”
Alexander was ranked among the top 50 cornerbacks in the Class of 2025, according to composite rankings from 247Sports. He had received scholarship offers from Auburn, Cincinnati, and several other programs.
His death follows the loss of another Division I college football player who died in a tragic incident less than a month ago.
