PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball guard Egor Demin earned a Big 12 weekly honor.

The Big 12 Conference named Demin Co-Newcomer of the Week, sharing the award with Kansas guard Zeke Mayo.

Last season, no individual BYU player earned any Big 12 weekly awards.

Egor Demin named Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week

Demin excelled as BYU’s starting point guard while Dallin Hall was sidelined.

The former Real Madrid player averaged 19.0 points, 9.0 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.0 steals during BYU’s successful opening week.

In his collegiate debut, the Moscow, Russia native scored 18 points and recorded 11 assists in an 88-50 victory over Central Arkansas. This marked the first time a Big 12 freshman had scored 10+ points and registered 10+ assists in a debut since Trae Young.

Demin not only made history in the Big 12 but also set a BYU record by recording the most assists in a BYU debut.

National basketball analysts quickly took notice of Demin after his impressive debut. College basketball insider Jon Rothstein mentioned that Demin would make BYU “appointment TV” during the 2024-25 season.

Heralded BYU basketball freshman

Demin is the first five-star recruit for BYU basketball in the internet era.

The 6-foot-9 guard is projected to be an NBA Lottery Pick in next June’s NBA Draft.
