The Los Angeles Lakers are on a hot streak, currently ranked third in the Western Conference ahead of Sunday’s home game against the Los Angeles Clippers. However, the Lakers are dealing with multiple injuries, including LeBron James and Luka Doncic, both listed as questionable.
Also on the injury list is Maxi Kleber, who joined the Lakers in the surprising trade that brought Doncic from Dallas to Los Angeles in early February. Kleber has not played this season due to a foot fracture suffered earlier this year and is still in recovery.
According to Jovan Buha of The Athletic via Hoopshype and Bleacher Report, there is growing optimism that Kleber could return before the regular season ends.
“I’ve heard that there is some optimism that a return (for Kleber) before the end of the regular season is possible,” said Buha.
While Doncic was the centerpiece of the blockbuster trade, Kleber’s role shouldn’t be overlooked. He was a key contributor during the Mavericks’ deep playoff runs during the Doncic era.
Although not a traditional post player, Kleber’s ability to shoot from beyond the arc could benefit the Lakers’ frontcourt following the Anthony Davis trade. Lakers fans remember his clutch three-pointer against them late last season.
Still, coach JJ Redick is expected to use Kleber in a limited capacity, with his role likely depending on matchups and the Lakers’ injury situation.
The Lakers’ next game is set for Sunday night at 9:30 p.m. EST against the Los Angeles Clippers.
