Top Virginia Tech Football Performers and Disappointments from the 2025 Combine

It was a big weekend in Indianapolis for several Hokies football players.

Following a quiet 2024 NFL Combine and Draft, this year is shaping up to be very different for former Virginia Tech players. Six Hokies participated at Lucas Oil Stadium this weekend, and there’s no doubt that some of them boosted their draft stock heading into next month’s Draft in Green Bay.

With that in mind, how did some of the Hokies perform? Let’s break down a few winners and losers from the Combine.

Virginia Tech Combine Winners

Bhayshul Tuten

Before the Combine, Bhayshul Tuten was generating some pre-draft buzz, but he made a strong statement on Friday. He posted a 4.32-second 40-yard dash, faster than current NFL backs Jahmyr Gibbs and Saquon Barkley. And that was just the beginning.

Tuten also recorded the best vertical jump and tied for second in the broad jump among running backs, a deep group this year. A first-round jump is unlikely, but his draft stock is clearly on the rise, and he should go higher than expected. Tuten may end up as the biggest Combine winner from Virginia Tech.

Jaylin Lane

Receiver Jaylin Lane made a name for himself on Saturday with his on-field performance. Just how good was he? Consider this: he ran a 4.34 40-yard dash, hit 11 feet in the broad jump, and clocked a 6.75 in the 3-cone drill — numbers better than Ja’Marr Chase, Christian Watson, and Kadarius Toney.

Lane also impressed at the Reese’s Senior Bowl in January, often outshining more high-profile receivers, and he did it again in Indianapolis. Like Tuten, Lane is climbing mock drafts and team boards alike.

Aeneas Peebles

Defensive tackle Aeneas Peebles took the field Friday and made an impression with his speed, hitting 20.47 MPH on a 4.95-second 40-yard dash. Though his vertical and broad jump results were average, his quickness and technique are sure to appeal to NFL teams.

Currently projected as a Day 3 pick, Peebles could push into early Day 3 territory — or even sneak into the tail end of Day 2.

Virginia Tech Combine Losers

Tyler Bowen

Yes, Tyler Bowen has already left the program to become Ohio State’s offensive line coach, but after watching both the Combine and the Senior Bowl games, it’s hard not to feel Virginia Tech’s offense wasted a real chance last fall. There was preseason optimism for good reason, but poor play calling held the offense back.

The early-season play calling was especially frustrating, and it’s clear several offensive weapons were underused. With the talent Virginia Tech had, they should have finished better than 6-6.

Antwaun Powell-Ryland, Dorian Strong, and Da’Quan Felton also performed well in Indy, with Strong already making noise back in January at the Senior Bowl. All three are expected to be drafted, and Strong could keep climbing as the Draft approaches.
