Ashton Jeanty has taken a major step toward being selected by the Cowboys in the draft.
After watching the NFL Combine this past weekend, it’s hard to make a strong case for the Dallas Cowboys to select a running back with the No. 12 overall pick. However, considering Dallas’ need at the position and their history of drafting running backs early, the Ashton Jeanty hype is growing rapidly.
Jeanty did not participate in any workouts at the Combine, but he measured in at 5-8 and 211 pounds. While he may not be the best athlete, he is a more skilled runner, and as the consensus RB1 in the draft class, it’s understandable why he chose not to participate.
Expect Jeanty to showcase his talents at his pro day, which has yet to be scheduled. Despite Dallas not meeting with him in Indianapolis, the Jeanty-to-Cowboys rumor is gaining momentum.
There’s a reason for that. ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler reported that Jeanty will have a Top 30 visit with the Cowboys, while team writer Patrik Walker mentioned that it will likely be a Dallas Day visit rather than a Top 30 one. Regardless, it’s clear the Cowboys will sit down with the Heisman Trophy finalist before the draft in April.
It’s also important to note that Jeanty received “encouraging results” from his Combine medicals, according to Fowler. We know how much a prospect’s stock can drop due to medical concerns, but Fowler reports that Jeanty’s elbow injury from last season is not a long-term issue.
