BYU Coach Gives Injury Update on Kanon Catchings
PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball is dealing with an injury as they prepare for Tuesday’s Top 25 matchup against Iowa State.
Freshman Kanon Catchings sustained an injury during the first half of Saturday’s victory over West Virginia.
The 6-foot-9 forward exited the game after playing just four minutes. He did not return to action and was seen on the bench in the second half with an ice pack on his left knee following BYU’s 77-56 win against the Mountaineers.
Following the game, BYU head coach Kevin Young stated that Catchings would “have it looked at” on Sunday.
Before the team’s departure for Ames to face the No. 10 Cyclones on Tuesday night, Young gave an update on Catchings’ status.
Kanon Catchings Injury Update: “Day-to-day”
“It wasn’t as serious as it initially appeared, which is a positive,” Young said. “He’s day-to-day, and we’re treating it that way.”
Since January 14, Catchings has been coming off the bench in a reserve role. He has scored double figures in three games since being moved out of the starting lineup, including performances against teams currently projected in the NCAA Tournament (Baylor, West Virginia, and Arizona).
Catchings has been scoreless in four of the past five games. However, in the win at Arizona, he tallied 14 points and shot 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Since mid-January, Mawot Mag has started in Catchings’ place at the four spot. The former Rutgers transfer is shooting 40% from three-point range this season.
A former four-star recruit from Overtime Elite, Catchings is averaging 7.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, and shooting 41.2% from the field during his freshman season.
