The Detroit Lions could be facing a tough decision with one of their promising offensive players.
With free agency approaching, Detroit is expected to reward Aidan Hutchinson and Kerby Joseph with long-term contract extensions.
Wide receiver Jameson Williams could also be due for a significant deal, but some believe the Lions should be cautious before committing to a large extension for the former first-round draft pick.
Detroit Free Press beat writer Dave Birkett discussed whether the Lions should extend Williams, providing reasons why the team should hesitate.
As Birkett stated, “No deal is imminent for Williams and the Lions, and there’s an argument to be made that the team should hold off on offering their young receiver a large contract. … Given Williams’ limited and uncertain NFL performance so far, the safest approach for the team is to delay a new deal.”
In his third year with the Lions, Williams recorded 1,001 yards and seven receiving touchdowns (eight total) on 58 receptions.
The speedy wideout is still under contract for the 2025 season. General manager Brad Holmes could still opt to exercise his fifth-year option this offseason.
The 23-year-old was expected to become the team’s No. 2 wide receiver in Ben Johnson’s offense. After returning from suspension, Williams met expectations and became a reliable target for veteran quarterback Jared Goff.
Birkett pointed out, “Once that happens, they’ll control Williams’ rights through 2026 with the option to franchise tag him after that. Williams’ future will become clearer in the next 12 months.”
