Jerry Jones shares the ‘greatest choice’ he’s made since becoming the Cowboys owner.
In 2014, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones came incredibly close to making what would have been one of his worst decisions as the team’s owner.
Thanks to some guidance from his son, Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones, it ultimately turned into what Jerry describes as the “best ‘right,’ decision” he’s ever made.
Many Cowboys fans still recall the 2014 NFL Draft, when star Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel slid down the first round and was available when Dallas picked at No. 16. Jones, like many others, was tempted by Manziel’s dazzling playmaking skills, and it seems he made an effort on draft night to select the quarterback.
Instead, the Cowboys owner went with the consensus of the draft room, choosing Notre Dame offensive lineman Zack Martin.
Following Martin’s retirement announcement this offseason, 11 years later, Jones reflected on that draft night. The Cowboys owner even credited his son, Stephen, for “kicking him under the table” during the decision, as ESPN’s Todd Archer reported.
“Best ‘right,’ decision I’ve ever made,” said Jerry Jones, who joked he still feels “knots” on his leg from Stephen kicking him under the table that night.
Martin had a stellar career, being named first-team All-Pro seven times over his 11 NFL seasons. Meanwhile, Manziel’s troubled NFL career ended after two seasons and just 14 regular-season games.
