Raiders and Maxx Crosby establish new market for Aidan Hutchinson with historic contract
One of the biggest priorities on the Detroit Lions’ 2025 offseason checklist is extending elite pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson to a new contract.
On Wednesday, the first major move in the defensive end market took place, as the Las Vegas Raiders signed Maxx Crosby to a three-year, $106.5 million deal, according to multiple reports. This averages out to $34.5 million per year, setting a new record for the highest-paid defensive player. Remarkably, the deal also includes $91.5 million guaranteed, which makes up about 86% of the total contract value.
Despite dealing with an injury, Hutchinson may be in a position to break some of those records. At 24 years old, he is significantly younger than Crosby (27), and he posted the same number of sacks last season (7.5) despite playing seven fewer games. This will also be Hutchinson’s first contract beyond his rookie deal.
However, as Adam Schefter pointed out, Hutchinson is one of several edge defenders due for major paydays this offseason. Players like Trey Hendrickson, Myles Garrett, T.J. Watt, and Micah Parsons are all expected to ask for—and likely receive—new contracts this year.
If the Lions and Hutchinson can’t reach a deal this year, Detroit could extend negotiations by exercising Hutchinson’s fifth-year option. This would effectively be a one-year, $19.9 million extension that would keep him under contract through the 2026 season.
Currently, it’s unclear where talks stand between Hutchinson and the Lions. Last week at the NFL Combine, Lions general manager Brad Holmes offered a vague update.
“We have one that’s due for an extension and we’ve already kind of gotten to the planning stages about him already,” Holmes said.
