Kelly Stafford Shares the Decision That Drove Her ‘F—— Mad’ During Husband Matthew Stafford’s NFL Offseason
Before Matthew’s decision to remain with the team, Kelly recalled the three weeks that “felt like three months” while he considered other contract options. The mother of four acknowledged her husband’s ability to stay calm during this time, with his future on the line, as well as the possibility of their family relocating if he didn’t re-sign with the Rams.
However, Kelly admitted that the uncertainty drove her “f—— mad.” “He’s [Matthew] so good at compartmentalizing everything. Me, on the other hand, when he says you think about the uncertainty all the time you go crazy, I went f—— mad, I went so crazy,” she shared on the podcast.
She also expressed her appreciation for Rams coach Sean McVay, calling him “such a good communicator” and giving him credit for ensuring everyone was informed and supported. “I just felt like he wanted to make sure everything was good for everybody, and I was grateful for that,” Kelly added.
Although the uncertainty of Matthew’s future “killed” her “in a lot of ways,” Kelly remained focused on what was best for her husband’s legacy. “At the end of the day, what I want is what’s best for you… this is his legacy.”
Now that Matthew has committed to the Rams, Kelly feels confident that it was the right decision. “This is where we both wanted to be, and I’m just glad he gets to play for the team and the coach that he wants to end his career with.”
Matthew made headlines this offseason when the Rams allowed him to negotiate with other teams, including the New York Giants, who reportedly offered a contract worth $90 million to $100 million. Matthew, however, was seeking around $50 million per season.
He joined the Rams in 2021 after being traded from the Detroit Lions, and he led the team to victory in that year’s Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals.
