BREAKING: BYU is reportedly planning to move on from women’s basketball head coach Amber Whiting, sources told @On3sports.
Whiting has led the Cougars since 2022, compiling an overall record of 45-51 during her tenure.
Report: BYU to part ways with Amber Whiting
Amber Whiting has served as BYU’s head coach for three seasons, overseeing the program’s transition from the West Coast Conference to the Big 12 Conference.
Throughout her three seasons, Whiting has recorded a 45-51 overall record, with each season ending with a losing record. In the most recent season, BYU finished 13-17, including a 4-14 mark in Big 12 play.
The 13 wins were the fewest in a single season under Whiting’s leadership.
Whiting took over a BYU program that had gone 26-4 and reached the NCAA Tournament in 2022. However, none of her teams have qualified for the tournament.
Before joining BYU, Whiting coached at Burley High School in Idaho for four seasons. She made the transition directly from high school coaching to leading a Power Conference program.
Amber Whiting’s record at BYU: 45-51 in three seasons
BYU concluded the 2025 season on a five-game losing streak, including a first-round loss to UCF in the Big 12 Tournament earlier this week.
“I told the team, we’ve lost eight games this season by ten points or less, and we’ve been right there in many of them,” Whiting said following the loss to UCF. “I see the positives, but we need to clean up small details. Turnovers and offensive rebounds have hurt us all season, so that has to be addressed. We need to focus on growth during the offseason.”
The reported coaching change comes at a pivotal moment for BYU athletics, as the school is also searching for a new athletic director. Tom Holmoe announced his retirement in February, and BYU has yet to name his successor.
