Turner Re-Signs with Detroit Lions for 2025 Season

The Detroit Lions have re-signed special teams linebacker Ezekiel Turner, who joined the team mid-way through the 2024 season.

Turner was brought in during the 2024 season as the Lions faced multiple injuries at linebacker. His primary role was on special teams, an area where he has thrived for the past seven years. When Turner was acquired in early November, Lions special teams coordinator Dave Fipp praised his reputation on special teams.

“He’s extremely smart and intelligent, and I have a lot of confidence and trust in him after such a short time,” Fipp said. “The special teams coach from Arizona even sent me a message saying, ‘I don’t know if I trust anyone more than him.’ That’s someone I hold in high regard. So, we’re happy with him.”

Turner ended up playing 176 special teams snaps in nine games for the Lions. Due to injury issues, the Lions also had to use him defensively.

While he had some struggles, Turner made one of the most impactful plays of the season by chasing down Packers quarterback Jordan Love to force a field goal attempt late in the game. The Lions would go on to win following the next possession.

What’s notable about Turner’s return is that Lions coaches have drawn comparisons between his skillset and Jalen Reeves-Maybin, whom the Lions are expected to release—though this has yet to be officially confirmed.

Currently, the Lions have eight linebackers under contract for the 2025 season: Alex Anzalone, Jack Campbell, Derrick Barnes, Malcolm Rodriguez, Anthony Pittman, Ezekiel Turner, Abraham Beauplan, and DaRon Gilbert.
