Lions Make Significant Roster Adjustments as Free Agency Nears

The Detroit Lions are proactively shaping their roster ahead of the 2025 NFL free agency period, which officially begins with the new league year on Wednesday, March 12, at 4 p.m. ET. The “legal tampering period” starts earlier, on Monday, March 10, at 9 p.m., allowing teams to negotiate with free agents before the official signing period begins.

On Friday, March 7, the Lions signed linebacker Derrick Barnes to a three-year, $25.5 million contract extension. Barnes, who joined Detroit in 2021, has been a key contributor to the team’s defense.

Additionally, the Lions re-signed veteran linebacker Anthony Pittman to a one-year deal. Pittman has been a reliable presence on special teams since joining Detroit.

The team also retained linebacker Ezekiel Turner, who was signed during the 2024 season. Turner has primarily contributed on special teams and is valued for his intelligence and versatility.

In a move affecting their pass rush, the Lions released edge rusher Za’Darius Smith. This decision frees up $5.7 million in cap space, as Smith’s contract included a $6.99 million option bonus due on March 14.

Regarding salary cap space, the Lions currently have approximately $55 million available. This substantial cap space positions them to be active in the upcoming free agency period, potentially adding new talent to strengthen their roster.

However, not all contract negotiations are proceeding smoothly. Cornerback Carlton Davis, who signed a three-year, $44.5 million contract previously, is expected to depart Detroit as he seeks a new deal that aligns with his performance level, aiming for a top-10 or top-15 cornerback salary ranging between $13 and $19 million annually. The Lions, however, aim to spend approximately $12 million annually on a veteran cornerback, suggesting a gap in financial expectations.

The Lions’ approach to free agency has been characterized by caution, favoring short, low-cost contracts over large, multi-year deals. This strategy has helped the team avoid burdensome contracts while maintaining financial flexibility.

As the free agency period unfolds, the Lions’ decisions will be closely watched, especially given their substantial cap space and the need to address key roster positions.
