Miami secures a one-year deal with former Lions defensive back to strengthen their safety position.
The Dolphins have decided to take a chance on former Detroit Lions third-round pick Ifeatu Melifonwu.
Melifonwu, a 25-year-old defensive back, transitioned to safety with the Lions after his rookie season in 2021.
Drafted in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, he adds a younger option to the Dolphins’ secondary.
Melifonwu dealt with an ankle injury during training camp before the 2024 season, which led to him being placed on injured reserve.
As a result, he missed the first two months of the season and played only three games towards the end of the year.
However, he had his best season in 2023, recording two interceptions, eight passes defended, and three sacks. Despite starting only six games, he was an impactful contributor.
This partnership between the Dolphins and Melifonwu seems ideal.
Miami is taking a low-risk chance on a young safety with the potential to start, while Melifonwu can compete for a starting role in a safety room with limited competition.
The Dolphins get an affordable opportunity to evaluate Melifonwu and see if he can step up as one of their starting safeties.
With only one safety, Patrick McMorris, remaining on the roster, Melifonwu’s arrival fills a crucial need.
After a rocky time in Detroit, Melifonwu now has a chance to battle for a starting spot in Miami. With minimal competition for the role, Melifonwu could be poised for a breakout 2025 season.
