Traded to Texans, former Lions safety’s leadership role with Eagles defense comes to an end.
Former Detroit Lions safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson has been traded to the Houston Texans, marking the end of his brief return to the Philadelphia Eagles.
After spending the 2023 season with the Lions, the 27-year-old signed a three-year deal to rejoin Philadelphia for a second stint.
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman made the decision to trade Gardner-Johnson and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Texans in exchange for offensive guard Kenyon Green and a 2026 fifth-round pick.
Last season, the outspoken defensive back posted six interceptions, 59 tackles, and one forced fumble.
Houston’s secondary will now include Gardner-Johnson alongside Jalen Pitre and Jimmie Ward.
The veteran defensive back had recently expressed that, after winning the Super Bowl, he felt like one of the leaders of the Eagles defense going forward.
“He brings an attitude. Anytime you can add quality players who make plays, that’s what you need,” Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham explained, via NBC Sports.
“I get that the business side of things sometimes forces a change when a player doesn’t get the money they want. I understand that, but I’m glad Howie brought him back, and it all worked out.”
After his Super Bowl win, Gardner-Johnson stirred controversy when he posted a provocative message on social media targeting Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce regarding his past relationships.
Gardner-Johnson has accumulated 18 career interceptions since being drafted by the Saints in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
