BYU’s Honor Code Mentioned on ‘Celebrity Jeopardy!’

At one point in the game, the contestants were quizzed on their coffee knowledge.

In a recent episode of “Celebrity Jeopardy!”, the contestants competed for the final spot in the semifinals and faced questions about coffee.

Having knowledge of Brigham Young University (BYU) and its honor code gave one contestant a slight advantage.

On Wednesday night, ESPN/NFL analyst Mina Kimes, actor Omar J. Dorsey, and comedian Fortune Feimster competed in the last quarterfinal game of “Celebrity Jeopardy!” (the winner will receive $1 million for charity).

During the third round, the contestants were asked questions about coffee.

The highest-value clue in the coffee category, worth $1,500, mentioned a school in Utah County: “The honor code of this Provo, Utah university instructs students to refrain from drinking coffee.”

Feimster correctly answered “BYU,” increasing her total from $4,100 to $5,600.

However, Kimes had the strongest performance overall.

She held a steady lead throughout the game and answered three of the four Daily Doubles correctly (“Celebrity Jeopardy!” has a unique format, different from regular “Jeopardy!”).

There were moments when it seemed Kimes didn’t know the answer to a Daily Double, but she would manage to provide the correct response just in time.

One instance occurred near the end when she wagered $2,000 in the “From the mouths of birds” category. The clue asked for the Kurt Vonnegut novel that features the bird call “poo-tee-tweet” as its final line. Kimes hesitated before responding with “Slaughterhouse Five” just before time expired.

Even host Ken Jennings seemed surprised by her quick recovery.

Her response brought her total to $15,600. By the time Final Jeopardy arrived, Kimes had already secured her win with $19,400. Dorsey had $8,800 in second place, while Feimster finished with $7,100.

Kimes will return to compete in the semifinals later in the season.

Was BYU’s ‘Jeopardy!’ clue Jennings’ idea?

Wednesday’s game marked the second time in under two months that BYU was mentioned on “Jeopardy!”

Back in January, during the “Tournament of Champions,” BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff was recognized, as previously reported by the Deseret News:

“In 2024, Jake Retzlaff of this Provo school, the only Jewish starting QB in college football, was one of 3 M.O.T.s on campus.”

Jennings, a recent BYU graduate, famously went on a 74-game winning streak and earned $2.5 million. At one point, he was even roommates with writer Brandon Sanderson, as reported by Deseret News.

However, despite his connection to BYU, it’s unlikely that he contributed either of the BYU-related clues.
