Detroit Lions Leader Confesses to Being Devastated by Teammate’s Sudden Release

The Detroit Lions are one of the NFL’s top teams heading into the new season, but that hasn’t shielded them from making tough decisions this offseason. One such decision was releasing linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, who had a significant role on special teams.

Reeves-Maybin spent seven of his eight years in Detroit, earning a Pro Bowl and All-Pro honor in 2023. However, after a subpar season, the Lions chose to part ways with his two-year, $7.5 million contract signed last offseason, and the move has already led one Lions leader to express his feelings.

Alex Anzalone took to social media with a simple response to Reeves-Maybin’s release. Quoting the team’s X account announcement, Anzalone replied with a broken heart and somber emoji, showing his sadness over the team’s decision.

As a leader on the Lions defense, it’s unlikely Anzalone will push for a trade. Yet, his response highlights the significance Reeves-Maybin had on the team during his time in Detroit.

Reeves-Maybin was drafted by the Lions in the fourth round of the 2017 draft, and his best season came in 2021 when he started 11 games, recorded 82 total tackles, four tackles for loss, four passes defended, and two forced fumbles. His strong performance led to a two-year, $7.5 million deal with the Houston Texans, but the partnership only lasted one season before he was let go.

This turned out to be a positive as Reeves-Maybin returned to Detroit, recording 20 tackles, one tackle for loss, and one sack in 17 games, with his special teams play earning him a Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection. His impressive performance resulted in another contract with the Lions. However, a neck injury midway through last season limited him to 10 games, leading to his release.

Ultimately, the Lions saved $2 million by cutting Reeves-Maybin. But for a team that has grown closer over the past two seasons, his departure is a tough loss for returning players.
