Bronny James has split his rookie season between the Los Angeles Lakers and their G-League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers. His playing time in the NBA has been limited, appearing in 19 games with the Lakers. James is averaging 1.6 points, 0.5 rebounds, and 0.4 assists in 4.8 minutes per game. Meanwhile, he’s had a more significant role in the G League, playing 16 games this season. Across seven Tip-Off Tournament games and nine regular-season matchups, James is averaging 17.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. On Friday night, he remained with the Lakers and played a season-high 16 minutes against the Denver Nuggets. With his last G-League appearance on March 10, it’s unclear how the Lakers decide his roster status. Following the Lakers’ 131-126 loss to the Nuggets, a reporter asked James about when he finds out where he’ll be playing.
Bronny James Discusses His Growth
James spoke about his development this season, saying, “Putting in work behind the scenes, it’s just been very good for me … I can see improvement and it’s been going well for me.”
When asked about his uncertain roster status, James responded, “Yeah, I’m playing it by ear. I don’t really know until 24 or less hours beforehand, so again, always staying ready for whatever comes at me and just going out and playing hard. Just staying ready and the most important is having the same mindset of being aggressive and being a great teammate and making the right play and stuff like that. I think that’s just going to be good for me down the road.”
What’s Next for James?
The South Bay Lakers’ next game is scheduled for Saturday, March 15, at 5 p.m. EST against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Lakers will face the Phoenix Suns on Sunday, March 16, at 3:30 p.m. EST. It remains to be seen which roster James will be on for the weekend. However, given the Lakers’ ongoing injury issues, it’s likely that head coach JJ Redick will keep him with the NBA squad.
